The overwhelming landscape of social media and what to do about it

As a brand, managing your social media presence can be a challenge. With so many different platforms to choose from, and so much content to keep up with, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

Here are a few tips for managing the overwhelming landscape of social media as a brand:

  • Choose your platforms wisely. Not all social media platforms are created equal. Consider your target audience and what platforms they are most active on. You don't need to be on every single platform, but it's important to be present on the ones that matter most to your brand.

  • Create a social media strategy. Once you've chosen your platforms, it's important to create a social media strategy. This will help you stay focused and aligned with your overall marketing goals. Strategy is just a fancy word for plan so include things like your target audience, your goals, and an execution plan (who will make this content and how often). From there hone in on what your audience likes, and double down.

  • Check your goals. Speaking of goals. A lot of people default to “Lots of followers and engagement” but did you ever think of why? make sure the platform you choose and your social media strategy supports your business goals overall, otherwise, it’ll be a surefire time suck. IF you’re looking for sales, the time and resources trying to build a channel of 1 Million followers to then direct to your site might be better well spent in a different tactic that more directly impacts final sales. The point here is don’t get sucked into generic goals or what other people do, make sure your social media strategy will support your business.

  • Make it sustainable. Good content and consistency are the only things that will work over time. So ensure that your resources are aligned with your strategy - meaning if your strategy is to post 5x a day across 3 platforms, make sure that you have enough bandwidth or budget to make this a reality. If not, zero in and focus on less.

  • Use social media management tools. There are a number of social media management tools available that can help you save time and be more efficient with your social media marketing. These tools can help you schedule posts, track analytics, and engage with your audience. Using a scheduler will help take some of the noise out of your head and help you post consistently. Each tool is different and has strengths in different areas so make sure the tool matches up with your goals as well.

  • Delegate tasks. Easier said than done, right? If you have the resources, consider delegating some of your social media tasks to someone else. This could free up your time so that you can focus on other aspects of your business. Even a portion of delegating tasks can help, finding a content creator, a copywriter, somebody who can schedule the posts, or even manage the day-to-day engagement will be a big help.

  • Measure your results. It's important to track your social media results so that you can see what's working and what's not. This will help you refine your strategy over time. Aside from formal reporting, we’ve always had the best luck with regular gut checks and optimizations. You don’t need a report to tell you which posts your audience loves, so set a reminder monthly to dive into your channels, zoom out on creative and content, and assign changes you’d like to try for the next month.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Be real. People can spot a fake from a mile away. Be genuine and authentic in your social media interactions.

  • Be consistent. Post regularly and consistently across all of your social media platforms. This will help you keep your audience engaged.

  • Be creative. There's a lot of noise on social media, so it's important to find ways to stand out. Be creative with your content and your engagement tactics.

  • Be social. Social media is all about social interaction. Don't just post and then disappear. Engage with your audience by responding to comments and questions.

Remember, social media is a powerful tool that can help you connect with your audience, build brand awareness, and drive sales. But it's important to use it wisely. By following the tips above, you can manage the overwhelming landscape of social media and achieve your business goals.
